SCHOOL SAFETY

Your child’s safety is our number one priority at Allen W. Roberts. There are many facets to school safety from the playgrounds, the hallways, the classrooms but it truly starts at the beginning of the day, the drop-off. Allen W. Roberts school administrators work closely with the New Providence borough police to find the safest and most effective ways to improve the drop off and pick up procedures for our school. A school resource officer is assigned to AWR to assist with all aspects of student safety.

For this reason, certain rules and procedures are in affect when it comes to drop off and after school pickup. It is imperative that you read these procedures, understand them and follow them. A few changes have been made in terms of these procedures, so please read the following forms carefully and thoroughly.

We know pick up and drop off can be challenging but we hope with some of these changes and everyone’s cooperation we can make it safe, smooth and efficient for everyone involved. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Safe Routes to School
Former AWR & Salt Brook parents Cecile Seth and Donna Zane had formed a Safety Committee to introduce a new interactive personalized Google map of our school district noting crossing guard locations. MAP IS BELOW! Please click on colored features for specific instructions at each location. The Safety Committee's work eventually led to the award of Safe Routes to School grants in 2016, 2018 and 2022 to improve the walkability of New Providence.

Throughout the school year, AWR hosts Walk n Roll events to encourage alternative ways of getting to school from walking to biking/scootering. It helps the environment by keeping the car line from getting overburdened as well as being great exercise. We also host the Bike Rodeo in the 3rd grade to teach bike safety by practicing the rules of the road with a mini-course in our North Parking Lot.

DROP OFF (MORNING PROCEDURES)

Please watch our short 1 minute video (above) to see the front circle procedures.
  • Opens at 8:15 am.
  • Adhere to the “every other car rule” when entering from Jones Drive and Crane Circle (otherwise known as zippering)
  • There is NO PARKING in the front circle.
  • PULL UP as far forward in the front circle as you can (to the “Drop Off Starts Here” sign)- do not leave large gaps.
  • Children MUST EXIT ON THE RIGHT, onto the sidewalk. Please make it easy by moving younger children’s car seats behind the driver.
  • If children cannot reliably exit the car on their own, do not use drop off. PARK & WALK options are available.
  • DO NOT PASS cars on the left in the circle. Wait until the cars in front of you are moving.
  • Left turns when exiting onto Jones Drive is permissible, but consider TURNING RIGHT to ease congestion.

  • Front of car faces the middle of the parking lot (BACK INTO SPOT!)
  • FOLLOW DIAGRAM
  • If the parking lot is FULL, you must exit and find parking on the street.
  • Please DO NOT LEAVE LARGE GAPS between cars
  • NO PARKING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LOT - you could be ticketed
  • ABSOLUTELY NO PARKING in the teachers parking lot!

DO'S AND DON'TS

DO
  • DO BACK IN to your spot when parking in the back lot during pick up. No head in parking is allowed.
  • DO tell the adults responsible for dropping off or picking up your child the rules. They may not be aware of the procedures for drop off and pick up. This is especially for substitute drop off or pick up people!
  • DO be courteous to pedestrians and drivers. Everyone has places to go and things to do—be patient, follow the rules and be respectful of each other.
  • DO PARK your car onto Jones Drive if your child is having difficulty in the morning and needs a few moments to collect him or herself before going off to school.
DON'T
  • DON’T PARK in the middle of the back lot during pick-up time.
  • DON’T leave large gaps in between cars when dropping off at the front circle or parking in the back lot. We want to accommodate as many cars as possible. Big gaps means less cars.
  • DON’T pick up or drop off along the opposite side of Jones Drive (facing Crane Circle).
  • DON’T text or speed in the school zone area. While this seems obvious, it still happens and we want to keep our children safe!
  • DON’T park in Commerce Circle. That is not a designated parking lot.
  • DON’T park in the back lot before 2:30. Sometimes classes will go out there for an afternoon recess or school activity. There’s no reason to be parked there prior to 2:30.
